Timmins, Ontario, Here Come the Irish! The Notre Dame Fighting Irish Varsity Girls Hockey Team booked their tickets to compete at the OFSAA Championship Tournament by winning the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference Championship on Wednesday, March 7; defeating the home side St. Mary’s Crusaders 4-1. The Irish gave up an early goal to the Crew in the first period. Jenna Maclean equalized a few minutes into the second period and the Irish never looked back. Emily Clark provided solid goaltending that sparked the ‘Irish Spirit’ and the girls went on to score an additional 3 unanswered goals (goals scored by Sarah Boucher, Gaby Condello and Krystal Hill).
The Irish qualified for the G.H.A.C. Championship Game by defeating neighborhood rival M.M.Robinson by a score of 8-0 in the G.H.A.C Semi-Final. In the Inaugural Halton Catholic Athletic Association Championship the Ladies beat the Loyola Hawks in a nail biting 2-1 battle in front of a sold out crowd at 16 Mile Arena.
The ladies fought back from an injury plagued season that saw a quarter of the team benched with concussions, shoulder injuries and a broken wrist; finishing 2nd overall in league play. The ‘Luck of the Irish’ healed the injured in time for the ladies to gain steam heading into the playoffs. The ladies now look to capture Provincial Gold for the first time in team history. The Lady Irish would like to thank Mr. Cordiero, and the coaching staff comprised of Math teacher Ms. Giardina, Phys. Ed. Teacher Ms. Hughes, student teacher Caroline O’Brien and Community School Officers Adam Syring and Jeff Swoob, for their hard work, dedication, and constant support this season.
Look out Ontario, the Irish are here!
